All about a run

Markings

Many hashes might have different markings for the trails. Even individual hares might have their own flavour. The Hanoi Hash uses the below basic signs. The the circle befor the run, the hares will explain these signs to all especially to new comers and visitors.

Instructions for hares.

Here are some guidelines on how to setup a run

  • Start preparations at home, using Google Maps or (preferably) Google Earth and look for potential nice trails with not too many concrete roads. Select an area which is not too far away from Hanoi (i.e. less than 50 km). On Google Earth you can draw a trail (using the Add Path function) and then you have an indication of the total length.
  • The best way is first to find a suitable circle and a beer stop. Then find paths that link both points (for an A to A trail). A location for a circle needs to be accessible by the bus and preferably some distance from the main road and some space to park the bus and have the circle. Avoid “culturally sensitive” locations, such as close to cemeteries.
  • Alternatively, you can opt for an A to B trail (but make sure that the bus driver can find point B!).
  • Walk trails should be not too long and ideally could be finished in 2 hours (excluding a beer stop). Extra loops can be made for those fast running bastards. Ideally, runners and walkers should finish at around the same time.
  • Use false trails and check-points so that the pack remains together more or less. It’s also more fun!
  • For marking, use shredded paper, flour, chalk or paint. Do NOT paint on walls of houses and other buildings.

Previous trails

Below are previous hash trails, which is a selection of many trails Finger has recorded over a period of 5 years. They were selected to be relatively easy to walk or run (no high mountain climbing), and preferably with a beer stop in a local bia hoi. You don’t have to follow the trail exactly, they are merely meant for suggestions. Find you own way through the bush… Below each map the coordinates are provided of the starting point (Circle). Note that all information and geo-positions provided are estimates only. There may be a margin of error of several tens of meters. So, the points and maps are indicative only, to provide suggestions for your own trail. Disclaimer: all trails should be examined again before the hash. Past trails can have changed, be gone or blocked by new developments, etc. Also beer stops could be closed since. So a reconnaissance visit is strongly recommended before setting the trail.
